Bathroom Remodeling: Plan the Room Before Picking Tile

Lusso Journal · Bathroom planning

4 minute read · Planning guide

Bathroom remodeling planning is easier when the room’s everyday role comes before its decorative details. A beautiful tile can help establish the atmosphere, but it cannot resolve an awkward door swing or a vanity without useful storage. Start with how the bathroom needs to work, then bring the finishes into that plan.

The useful order

Understand the routine, check the layout, plan storage and lighting, then compare surfaces suited to their intended locations.

Describe the bathroom you use today

Take a few wide room photos and record approximate dimensions. Note the existing fixtures, doors, windows and the places where daily routines feel inconvenient. Does a drawer interrupt the route to the shower? Are towels stored too far from where they are needed? Is the mirror area difficult to light?

Also record what you want to keep. A useful planning brief explains both the problems and the room’s strengths. Rough measurements can support a first discussion, while final ordering and installation require verified dimensions.

Give the bathing area the right share of the room

A larger shower is not automatically a better plan. Consider its relationship to the vanity, storage and comfortable movement through the room. Whether a bathtub remains important depends on the household and the way the space is used.

Look at door swings, shower screens and fixture access together. Keeping existing fixture locations may simplify some projects, but any decision should follow an assessment of the actual room and intended scope.

Plan storage around real items

List the things that need a place: everyday toiletries, spare towels, cleaning supplies and larger personal-care items. Drawers, cabinets and open shelves solve different problems. Think about which items should be within easy reach and which should remain out of sight.

When exploring vanity cabinetry, keep the basin and plumbing requirements in view. A door sample shows the appearance of a finish; it does not show the usable storage of the final vanity configuration.

Choose tile for its location as well as its look

Coordinating wall and floor tile can create continuity, but that does not mean one product is suitable everywhere. Check each manufacturer’s intended use, care requirements and suitability for the specific setting. Review the tile, grout and adjoining finishes together with physical samples.

Our tile guide is a useful starting point for comparing visual directions. Waterproofing, drainage, ventilation and fixture compatibility should be reviewed with qualified professionals as part of the project; a surface photograph cannot establish those requirements.

Include lighting and the small daily details

Useful mirror lighting and general illumination serve different purposes. Think about where shadows fall, how the room changes between day and evening, and where controls should be convenient to reach. Locate towel storage, outlets, paper holders and shower storage before finishing details are finalized.

  • Bring room photos and approximate measurements.
  • Write down three daily frustrations and three priorities.
  • Choose a few references and explain what you like about them.
  • Discuss specific access needs early with the appropriate professional.
